Example

Suppose the tape librarian is asked to convert reel tape REEL01 to a cartridge tape for user ID ANDI:

  1. Issue tape mounts for the existing reel tape and for an available scratch cartridge tape:
vmtape mount reel01 181 (noring anytape
vmtape mount scratch 289 dsn data.set.name (den 38K ring

  2. Using PIPE or another available utility, copy the data from the reel tape mounted on raddr 181 to the scratch tape mounted at raddr 289. You can use the following sample exec to copy any tape to another:
    /* copy tape 181 to 289 */
    ‘TAPE REW (TAP1’
    ‘TAPE REW (TAP9’
    do until recs.1=0
       ‘PIPE’,
          ‘| tape TAP1’,
          ‘| tape TAP9 wtm’,
          ‘| count lines’,
          ‘| stem recs.’
       end

  3. After the data has been copied from the reel tape (REEL01) to cartridge (CART01), use the CA VM:Tape LIST command to determine additional TMC data set name information for the reel tape if it exists:
    vmtape list reel01

  4. Using the information obtained from the LIST command, issue the CA VM:Tape CATALOG command to update data set information in the TMC for cartridge tape CART01:
    vmtape catalog cart01 dsn data.set.name (fileseq 2

Repeat the CATALOG command for each data set on the tape. Additional volume information such as passwords and expiration dates can also be cataloged as desired.

  5. Using the CA VM:Tape EDIT command, mark the reel tape as deleted from the TMC:
vmtape edit reel01 replace deleted on

  6. Assign the updated cartridge tape to the requesting user ID:
vmtape edit cart01 replace cjob andi

Cartridge tape CART01 is now owned by user ID ANDI, and contains the data from reel tape REEL01.
