How to Build a Backlog

In Agile development, a product backlog is the list of user stories and issues, known as backlog items, for a product. The items come from requirements, customer feedback, defects, and other sources. The Agile product owner and the scrum team use the backlog to manage the work related to features and defect fixes during a release of the product. The CA Agile Vision Backlog page displays the product backlog as an ordered list of current and upcoming PBIs for a product.

The Agile product owner can build the backlog during product and release planning to identify which user stories and issues are to be completed during the release. The following diagram shows the steps a product owner uses to build a basic product backlog.

The Product Owner builds the backlog with user stories and issues.

Perform these steps to build the backlog:

  1. Verify Prerequisites
  2. Create Backlog User Stories and Issues
  3. Rank the Backlog Items
  4. Assign Backlog Items to a Release Sprint
  5. Optional: Create Tasks for Backlog Items
