Example

You have defined the series of tapes, SERIES VMT001 10, where the media type is reel. To migrate the series to HPT media:

  1. Run the GRW Tape Summary Report listing the status of each tape in the series you want to migrate from. If any tapes are listed as scratch, the physical copying of the tapes to HPT media is not necessary.

Note: For information about creating GRW reports, see Producing Reports.

  2. Remove the tapes from the tape library. Then, allocate a 3590 tape drive to be used as output by the migration utility:
    vmtape allocate 289 (unit 3590

  3. Tape by tape, mount each tape in the series, and mount scratch 3590 tapes on the drive allocated at virtual address 289. In this example, CA VM:Tape is used to mount the input tapes.
    vmtape mount vmt001 (anytape

Note: If any of the tapes are defined as scratch, you can bypass this step because there is no data to migrate.

Copy the data from 181 to 289 using a migration utility:

    det 181
    tape run (tap9
    vmtape mount vmt002 (anytape
    (copy the data)
    	.
    	.
    	.

  4. After all tapes are migrated to the new media, update the TMC to reflect the new media type. For each tape in the series, use the CA VM:Tape EDIT command to update the DEN and TRTCH fields in the TMC to show that the tapes are HPT tapes:
vmtape edit vmt001 replace den e8
vmtape edit vmt001 replace trtch e8
vmtape edit vmt002 replace den e8
vmtape edit vmt002 replace trtch e8

At this point, the migration of the series is complete. Place the new tapes in the tape library; set aside the reel tapes in the event problems are discovered later.

  5. Be sure to update the appropriate SERIES record in the VMTAPE CONFIG file to show that the series has been converted. The new series should read the following:
    SERIES VMT001 10 HPT
