Object Tree Object Views

When you expand an Object Tree category folder, Source Objects are displayed. Source Objects have subdirectories which can display three additional types of object views.

To open or display an object click it in the Object Tree, the object view selected is displayed. You can have multiple displays of an object at the same time, a new additional display of the object appears for each time you click it in the Object Tree.

The object view types available are:

Source Object Views

Source Object Views have a factory supplied default view that typically displays all the available information about the Source Object. You cannot delete or rename Source Objects. You can modify Source Object Views and the modified view can be saved such that the modified view is what is seen each time the Source Object is opened. You can return the Source Object View to the factory setting by right clicking it in the Object Tree and selecting Return to Default Settings. You can also modify a Source Object View and save it as a user created User View.

Note: For more information about the difference between Source Object Views and other object views see the chapter "User Views."

Factory-supplied User Views

Factory-supplied User Views are located in a subdirectory under the Source Objects from which they are created. A factory-supplied User View contains a useful collection of Source Object attributes. You can delete, rename, and modify factory supplied User Views as needed. You can return the factory supplied User View to its original settings if you remember the changes you've made, however there is no Return to Default Settings option for factory supplied User Views. You can also modify a factory supplied User View and use the Save As option to save it as a user created User View.

Note: For more information about factory supplied User Views see the chapter "User Views."

User created User Views

User created User Views are located in a subdirectory under the Source Objects from which they are created. A user created User View is a view of the object you created and contains a collection of Source Object attributes you have defined. You can delete, rename, and modify user created User Views.

For example, the object tree category DASD Volumes Online has a source object named Space and Other Attributes. The source object Space and Other Attributes is composed of many attributes, including device type, model number, total capacity, and so on. If you want to focus only on the percent allocated, bytes allocated, and byte capacity attributes, open the Space and Other Attributes and Source object and remove the attributes you do not need. Then use the Save As… command to save a copy of the User View you create under a new name. Your new User View will be located under the Space and Other Attributes object and it includes only the attributes you defined.

Note: For more information about Source Object Views see the chapter "User Views."

Summary Objects

Summary Objects are located in a subfolder under the Source Objects from which they are created. There are factory-supplied Summary Objects and there are user-created Summary Objects. A Summary Object defines groups or “buckets” of information from the Source Object. It provides statistics about all the object rows that fall into that group or bucket. To create a Summary Object right click the Source Object in the Object Tree and select the New Summary Object option or you can open the Source Object and select View then click New Summary Object. Both options will start the Summary Object Designer wizard and it will guide you through the process of creating a Summary Object.

Note: For more information about Summary Objects, see the chapter "Working with Summary Objects" in the CA Vantage SRM User Guide.

Joined Objects

Joined Objects are located in a subfolder under the Base Objects from which they are created.

CA Vantage SRM Joined Objects are the result of combining information from two existing objects, a Base Object and a Candidate Object. Each row within a Joined Object contains all the information from both the Base and Candidate Objects that were used to create it. Joined Objects are created using the Joined Object Designer wizard.

Joined Objects have an object name and an entry on the Object Tree under the Base Object that was used to define them. The Base Object is the object on the Object Tree that you right-click in order to begin the Joined Object definition. Joined Objects behave the same way as all other objects and can take advantage of all CA Vantage SRM services such as report distribution, historical logging, trending, and automation. This allows you to distribute reports, generate alerts, take automated actions, and identify trends - all based on the combined information present in Joined Objects.

To create a Joined Object right click the Source Object or Summary Object in the Object Tree and select the New Joined Object pop-up menu option or you can open the Source Object or Summary Object and select View then click New Joined Object. Both options will start the Joined Object Designer wizard and it will guide you through the process of creating a Joined Object.

Note: For more information about Joined Objects, see the chapter "Working with Joined Objects" in the CA Vantage SRM User Guide.
