6.2.4.2 CA NetMaster Network Error Warning System (NEWS)

CA NetMaster NEWS provides diagnostic and reliability data,
including component error statistics and traffic volumes,
similar to Tivoli NetView Hardware Monitor/NPDA. NEWS
directs this data to SMF as the type 37 subtype 1 record.
The CA MICS Network Analyzer Option processes this SMF record
to add diagnostic and reliability data to the CA MICS
database. NEWS data is written to the CA MICS NPDA Files and
processed by the CA MICS standard NPDA reports.

NEWS DATA TYPES
---------------

The information recorded by NEWS consists of:

o Statistics, which are records of communications traffic
     and temporary (recoverable) errors.

o Events, which are either specific errors reported by
communications devices or statistics that exceeded the
site-defined threshold for the error-to-traffic ratio.

o Alerts, which are events that qualify for alert status
as a result of the user-defined Alert recording filters.

The data center controls what qualifies as events and alerts,
and typically defines these qualifications so that critical
information is recorded. It also controls the number of NEWS
SMF type 37 records produced through the recording filters.
