CA VM:Tape and IBM 3490E Tape Drives

CA VM:Tape supports the IBM 3490E cartridge drive as well as the enhanced capacity cartridge, which can only be used with the 3490E drive. This section reviews some of the conceptual changes that affect the way you use CA VM:Tape and lists the changes needed at your site to use the 3490E drive and the enhanced capacity cartridge.

With the 3490E cartridge drive, there are three categories of density support: verify (check the volser within the VOLID MARK), read, and write. The Density and Media Settings table shows what density types apply to the different types of drives. For example, a drive can verify a volume written with a density that it cannot read, or read a density that it cannot write. With every mount, the selected drive verifies the volser and reads or writes the volume.

In addition, the 3490E drive uses a 36-track recording technique. The 3490E can read standard 18-track cartridges, but it can only write in 36-track format.
