Use the CA VM:Tape ALLOCATE command, rather than the CP ATTACH command, to attach a tape drive to a user ID without mounting a volume. The ALLOCATE command is preferred because if no drives are currently available, the allocation queues until a drive is free. Using CP ATTACH causes CA VM:Tape to behave unpredictably.
