How to Perform Disaster Recovery with RSI

As a System Administrator, you use CA Server Automation to manage and provision your physical and virtual server environments. You require a reliable mechanism for disaster recovery.

Rapid Server Imaging (RSI) provides cross-platform and heterogeneous hardware provisioning, physical and virtual server migration, disaster recovery, and image capture and deployment. Images can be deployed across dissimilar hardware with multiple operating environments provided the hardware belongs to the same processor family.

The following process provides a high-level overview of how to use RSI to perform disaster recovery for your managed servers:

1. Verify RSI Prerequisites
   • RSI Prerequisites for Hyper-V
2. Register the RSI Server.
3. Back up servers by Capturing RSI Images and storing their images in the RSI depot.
   • (Windows Only) Capture Windows Driver Sets
   • (Optional) Automate RSI Actions. Define a Schedule to capture RSI images on a periodic basis.
4. Recover server images to a new server by Deploying RSI Images from the RSI depot.
   • (Optional) Automate RSI Actions. Create a Rule to deploy an image automatically, based on monitored server events.
   • Deploy RSI Images to Bare-Metal Servers to recover system images, including a new operating system, to empty servers.
   • Deploy RSI Images to AppLogic to recover system images into a base CA AppLogic OS application.
