6.1.5 CA NetMaster Network Tracking System (NTS)

CA NetMaster Network Tracking System (NTS) provides services
similar to those provided by NetView Session Monitor/NLDM.
NTS data is written to the CA MICS NLDM files.

NTS controls the performance class (CA NetMaster RTM class)
definitions for the Response Time Monitor (RTM).

NTS is shipped with a sample user exit to write the RTM data
to SMF as the type 39 subtype 3 record. Additionally, NTS
records session configuration, data traffic, and connect time
information in the SMF type 39 subtypes 4 and 5 record. This
information is referred to as CA NetMaster accounting data.
The CA MICS Network Analyzer Option processes these SMF type
39 record subtypes to add RTM and accounting data to its
database.

The INPUTSMF DD statement specifies the data set name for the
CA NetMaster input data to the NLDM (Network Logical Data
Manager) files. It is your responsibility to provide an
archive file that contains the SMF type 39 records for DAILY
processing by CA MICS.

Response Time Monitor
---------------------
The RTM function is provided in the cluster controllers.
This function includes a specific microcode support level and
a hardware timer-adapter card that is read by the microcode.
CA NetMaster RTM data includes average response time, a count
of the responses that occurred within user-defined response
distribution times, and an indicator of whether
data-center-defined service objectives were met during the
data recording interval.

Because service objectives may be defined differently for
different network users, NTS permits the data center to
define RTM classes and to associate each response objective
with a specific RTM class. An RTM class can be anything the
data center defines, from a group of sessions attached to a
particular cluster controller to all TSO sessions. RTM
classes are established using the CA NetMaster RTM class and
Session class definitions. NTS RTM classes are equivalent to
NetView performance classes and are referred to as
performance classes elsewhere in CA MICS documentation.

NTS records all RTM data to the SMF type 39 record, but both
NTS and NEWS can initiate collection of the RTM data. NTS
collects RTM data at session end and in response to NTS
operator commands to view RTM data on line. Only NEWS allows
for collection of RTM data at regular user-defined intervals.

Accounting and Availability
---------------------------
NTS accounting data consists of statistical data about user
sessions, including connect time, message and data traffic
counts, configuration data, and BIND failure information.

When the NTS accounting function is activated, the SMF type
39 record is written at session start, at session end, and
when a session is rejected due to a BIND failure.

NTS does not automatically synchronize periodic collection of
RTM and accounting data. Consequently, it can be misleading
to compare RTM and accounting data for a given period. For
information on how to provide for synchronized collection of
RTM and accounting data at regular intervals, see the
CA NetMaster documentation.

Your CA NetMaster administrator controls the NTS collection
of accounting and RTM data for sessions between network
resources through the definition of SAW (Session Awareness),
RTM, and Session NTS classes. NTS collects RTM data from
terminal controllers only under the following conditions:

o The terminal controller has the required RTM hardware
     and microcode installed.

o Your CA NetMaster administrator defines RTM classes to
  NTS.

o Your CA NetMaster administrator defines session classes
to NTS that associate the RTM classes to sessions
between host applications and terminals with RTM-capable
     controllers.

Accounting Data Collection
--------------------------
NTS accounting data collection is controlled by the following
NTS-dependent CA NetMaster SYSPARM:

    NTSACCT = SELECTIVE | ALL | NO

If your CA NetMaster administrator specifies NTSACCT =
SELECTIVE, NTS collects accounting data only for sessions
that are associated with a SAW class specifying ACCT=YES.

If your CA NetMaster administrator specifies NTSACCT = ALL,
NTS collects accounting data for all network sessions,
irrespective of SAW class definitions.

If your CA NetMaster administrator specifies NTSACCT = NO,
NTS collects accounting data for no sessions, SAW classes
specifying ACT=YES are ignored, and any selective accounting
collection ceases.

See the CA NetMaster documentation for SYSPARMS descriptions.
