This report produces a tabular listing of activity on
CP-owned VOLSERs for the duration of the period specified in
the run-time execution parameters. It includes those volumes
that are owned by this system, and those that are shared by
multiple systems in a Cross System Extensions (CSE) complex,
if CSE is in use. In VM, it additionally includes those
volumes that contain mapped minidisks.
INTENDED USE:
Allows analysis of page and spool activity on CP-owned
volumes, including such items as average and maximum slots
used, I/O activity, I/O queuing measures, and
interference from user I/O. This report can be used to
detect when page or spools spaces are approaching
capacity, and bottlenecks due to queuing of I/O or
interference from I/O activity for non-system (user)
activity.
FORMAT:
A tabular report in VOLSER order where each column
represents a different measurement associated with a given
VOLSER:
PAGE SLOTS USED AVG - The average number of page
slots in use on all paging areas defined for this
volume during the reporting period
PAGE SLOTS USED % - The percentage of available page
slots on the volume that the average used figure
above represents
PAGE SLOTS USED MAX - The maximum number of page
slots that were in use on all paging areas defined
for this volume during the reporting period
PAGE SLOTS USED % - The percentage of available page
slots on the volume that the maximum used figure
above represents
PAGE SLOTS USED TIME - The time of day when the
maximum used figure occurred
PAGE I/O READS - The total number of paging read
operations to this VOLSER during the reporting period
PAGE I/O WRITES - The total number of paging write
operations to this VOLSER during the reporting period
SPOOL SLOTS USED AVG - The average number of spool
slots in use on all spool areas defined for this
volume during the reporting period
SPOOL SLOTS USED % - The percentage of available
spool slots on the volume that the average used
figure above represents
SPOOL SLOTS USED MAX - The maximum number of spool
slots that were in use on all spool areas defined for
this volume during the reporting period
SPOOL SLOTS USED % - The percentage of available
spool slots on the volume that the maximum used
figure above represents
SPOOL SLOTS USED TIME - The time of day when the
maximum used figure occurred
SPOOL I/O READS - The total number of spool read
operations to this VOLSER during the reporting period
SPOOL I/O WRITES - The total number of spool write
operations to this VOLSER during the reporting period
I/O QUEUED AVG - The average number of page/spool
I/Os queued to this VOLSER during the reporting
period
I/O QUEUED MAX - The maximum number of page/spool
I/Os queued to this VOLSER during the reporting
period
I/O QUEUED TIME - The time of day when the
maximum queued figure occurred
USER I/O INTERFERENCE AVG - The average number of
times per monitor interval that user I/O interfered
with paging and/or spooling during the reporting
period
USER I/O INTERFERENCE MAX - The maximum number of
times during one monitor interval that user I/O
interfered with paging and/or spooling during the
reporting period
USER I/O INTERFERENCE TIME - The time of day when
the maximum interference figure occurred
An example of this report is provided in Figure 3-17.

DATA SOURCE (File/Timespan):
VMXCPV01 - DETAIL
DATA ELEMENTS USED:
VOLSER - Volume Serial Number
CPVPAGSL - Page Slots in Use on This Volume
CPVPCPSU - Percent Spool Slots Used
CPVPSLOT - Total Page Slots on This Volume
CPVPAGRD - Total Page Reads
CPVPAGWR - Total Page Writes
CPVSPLSL - Spool Slots in Use on This Volume
CPVPCSSU - Percent Page Slots Used
CPVSSLOT - Total Spool Slots on This Volume
CPVSPLRD - Total Spool Reads
CPVSPLWR - Total Spool Writes
CPVIOQCT - Page/Spool I/Os Queued or Active
CPVUSRIO - User I/O Interference Count
CPVPAGAR - Number of Page Areas on Volume
CPVSPLAR - Number of Spool Areas on Volume
CPVSHRD - CSE Shared Volume Indicator
CPVDUMPV - Dump Only Volume Indicator
CALCULATIONS:
As a first step, the maximum values and timestamps are
pulled out of the detail data, and put into a separate
file. As part of this process, the following calculations
are performed for maximum percentage of page/spool used:
MAXPCPAG = 100 * MAXPAGSL / MAXPSLOT;
where MAXPAGSL is the maximum value of CPVPAGSL
encountered, and MAXPSLOT was the value of CPVPSLOT
at the time
MAXPCSPL = 100 * MAXSPLSL / MAXSSLOT;
where MAXSPLSL is the maximum value of CPVSPLSL
encountered, and MAXSSLOT was the value of CPVSSLOT
at the time
The detail data is the read again, and summarized into
another file. Then the following calculations are
performed:
AVGPAGSL = CPVPAGSL / INTERVLS;
AVGSPLSL = CPVSPLSL / INTERVLS;
AVGIOQCT = CPVIOQCT / INTERVLS;
AVGUSRIO = CPVUSRIO / INTERVLS;
