A filter lets you identify file extensions that you want to include in a migration. However, you might want to only include those files if they are stored in a specific folder, or they were created after a certain date. Suppose you want to include some files with a certain extension, but not if they are in a specific directory. Or what if you want to include all the files in a certain folder, but exclude others if they are in a subfolder? You need to use an advanced filter.
An advanced filter goes beyond identifying extensions. Advanced filters let you identify file extensions and folders that you want to include or exclude in a migration. The Filters settings lets you create and test an advanced filter to make sure it finds the files and folders that you think match the criteria before you save it.
Your first step is to decide what type of filter you want to create. You can create the following types of filters:
Includes filters that specify files or folders that you want to migrate. These are no different than the basic list of filter extensions you add on the Select Search Filters page until you add criteria to them, such as creation date and size, location, and so on.
Excludes filters that specify files or folders that you do not want to migrate. These are the opposite of the filter extensions list you add on the Select Search Filters page.
Note: You can create a list of filters on the Select Search Filters page and modify one or more of them to be exclude filters. After you add all the file extensions, click Advanced. In the Filters dialog, select the filter, click Edit Filter, click the Exclude Filter option button, and then click Save Filter.
Additionally, you can provide the following types of omit criteria to remove specified folders from a search:
Specifies folders that you do not want to include. Files in these folders and the folders themselves are not included in the search. The omit folder criteria is specific to a filter. Suppose you want to include all .doc files in the My Documents\Project1 folder, except for those in the My Documents\Project1\Drafts subfolder. You can omit the subfolder from the search criteria.
Identifies the folders that you do not want to include in any filter processing. For example, your department store standard MS Office templates on a network server. You might want to Always Omit the ...\Microsoft Office\Templates folder from a filter search.
