In an OCS 2007 environment, the front-end server acts as a collection device. In the Enterprise Edition, separate servers house the front-end components, which send the quality reports, and their back-end database servers. The use of separate servers is a supported Microsoft configuration, but it can cause authentication issues when you configure collection devices.
In general, most of the servers you select can be successfully configured. When an extra hop is required to reach the back-end servers, the management console cannot be authenticated using the credentials that you supplied. Changes to some of the required settings are prevented on these servers.
In a typical case, you see both the front-end and back-end servers in the list of servers eligible to act as collection devices. You then select all of them and click Save to create collection devices. A success message indicates that the collection devices were configured. However, a message in the Collection Device List states that you must verify that QoE monitoring is enabled.
Pay attention to this message. Even when collection begins and you see report data from some Microsoft servers, other data is not collected.
