Reboot and Delete Amazon Machine Instances (AMI)

Use the following definitions to understand actions in the Actions menu.

Reboot Instance

Use the reboot instance to cycle an instance; for example, after applying software or patches. Requests to terminated instances are ignored.

Terminate Instance

Use Terminate instance to shut down an instance and return all resources to Amazon. For EBS instances, terminate causes both compute resources and storage charges to stop. Data is not retained and is not recoverable. Instances can be in a started or stopped state before termination. Terminated instances are visible in the user interface for approximately one hour.

startInstance

Valid only for EBS instances, this action starts a stopped instance. When you start a stopped instance, a new IP address is issued.

stopInstance

Valid only for EBS instances, use this action to stop charges for compute resources. Instance data and storage are saved (except data in RAM), and charges for data storage continue until the instance is terminated.

createImage

Valid only for EBS instances, use this action to create an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from a running or stopped instance.
