Configure the Recycle Bin

Optionally, configure the Recycle Bin to remove deleted files from the server immediately. The default behavior is for the system to save copies of deleted files in the Recycle Bin. This topic includes steps for Windows Server 2008 R2 and steps for Windows Server 2003.

Follow these steps on Windows Server 2008 R2:

1. Log in as a user who is a member of the Administrators group.
2. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop.
3. Select Properties from the menu.

   The Recycle Bin Properties dialog opens.

4. Select Local Disk (C:) on the General tab.
5. Select the option labeled "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted."
6. Click Apply.
7. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each additional drive that you want to configure.
8. Click OK.

Follow these steps on Windows Server 2003:

1. Log in as a user who is a member of the Administrators group.
2. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop.
3. Select Properties from the menu.

   The Recycle Bin Properties dialog opens.

4. Choose whether to configure all drives or configure each drive independently:
   • Configure drives independently:
     1. Select the drive to configure: Click the Local Disk (C:) tab.
     2. Select the option labeled "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted."
     3. Click Apply.
     4. Repeat steps A and B for each additional drive that you want to configure.
   • Use one setting for all drives:

     Select the option labeled "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.

5. Click OK.
