Determine Problems Using Error, Accounting, and Configuration Data

When investigating problems, you should investigate summary information about the session in question for clues as to the nature and cause of a problem, and where to look for more information.

To display summary information for a session

  1. Enter S beside a session in the NTS : Session List.

The NTS : Session Summary appears. This panel is a graphical display of all the information available about the selected session.

Display Error Data

Error data provides the error code and description for an error that occurs in a session.

To display error data for a session

  1. Enter E beside a session in the NTS : Session List.

The NTS : Session Error Data panel appears.

Note: For information about the fields and options displayed on this panel, press F1 (Help).

Display Configuration Data

Configuration data provides you with a graphical display of the network components that comprise the end points of a session connection. The display provides details about the network path between session partners.

To display configuration data for a session

  1. Enter C next to a session in the NTS : Session List.

The NTS : Session Configuration panel appears.

Note: For information about the fields and options displayed on this panel, press F1 (Help).

Example: Display Configuration Data

The following example shows sessions where the primary logical unit is an application residing on the host and the secondary logical unit is a terminal connected through an APPN network.

 PROD-------------------- NTS : Session Configuration --------------------NET001  COMMAND ===>      Primary Session Partner                      Secondary Session Partner                            +-------- SSCP --------+                            |  Name..... SYDVTM01  |                            |  Subarea.. 000E   |                            +----------------------+                                       ||      +----- SUBAREA PU -----+ <===== ROUTE =====> +----- SUBAREA PU -----+      |  Name..... ISTPUS    |                     |  Name..... NCP01C    |      |  Element.. 00000000  |       VR  0         |  Element.. 00000000  |      |  Subarea.. 000E   |       ER  0         |  Subarea.. 0010   |      +----------------------+       RER 0         +----------------------+                 ||             Suba TP  0            LINK    ||  J000G001      +---- LOGICAL UNIT ----+  APPN TP  1         +---- ADJACNT LNKST ---+      |  Name..... PROD      |                     |  Name..... XSYD11    |      |  Element.. 0000014C  |                     |  Element.. 000000EC  |      +----------------------+ APPN COS  #CONNECT  +----------------------+                               LOGMODE   SNX32702             ||                                                   +---- LOGICAL UNIT ----+      Started:  16:01:11  08/10/06                 |  Name..... XSYD1R02  |      Ended:    16:26:42  08/10/06                 |  Element.. 0000029C  |                                                   +----------------------+

The primary session partner’s hierarchy is shown on the left of the panel and the secondary session partner’s hierarchy is shown on the right of the panel. The right side shows the resource connectivity of an LU in an APPN network.

Display Session Route Data

Session route data provides a graphical display of the route that an APPN session takes through the network using the Route Selection Control Vector (RSCV) supplied by VTAM.

To display the network route for a session

  1. Enter AR beside the session you want on the NTS : Session List.

The NTS : APPN Session Route Display panel appears.

Note: For information about the fields and options displayed on this panel, press F1 (Help).

Note: VTAM does not remember the RSCV. If NTS is started after the session, VTAM cannot supply this information and the display may not contain the full session route information. The TSAR09 message appears.

Example: Display Session Route Data

 PROD------------------- NTS : APPN Session Route Display ----------------NET001  COMMAND ===>                                                   SCROLL ===> CSR         Primary Session Partner                   Secondary Session Partner                                      TG  21         +---- Primary CP ----+ <==================> +--- Secondary CP ---+         | Name..... SYDVTM01 |                      | Name..... XSYD11CP |         | Network.. NET001   |                      | Network.. NET001   |         +--------------------+                      +--------------------+                   ||                                          ||         +---- Primary LU ----+                      +--- Secondary LU ---+         | Name..... PROD     |                      | Name..... XSYD1R02 |         | Network.. NET001   |                      | Network.. NET001   |         +--------------------+                      +--------------------+

The route from the primary session partner to the local host is shown on the left of the panel. The route from the local host to the secondary session partner is shown on the right of the panel. The primary and secondary session partners can be logical units or control points. If the session partner is an LU, then its owning control point is shown.

Also shown are the logical links in the session route and the transmission group number assigned to the transmission group by the primary-side node.

Display Session Data

To display session data

  1. Enter DS beside the session you want on the NTS : Session List.

The VTAM Display Sessions output appears.

Note: You can display session data only if a session ID is provided by VTAM.

Display a Link Station

To view a VTAM display of a link station

  1. Enter DLS beside the session you want on the NTS : Session List.

    The VTAM display appears.

Note: You can view a VTAM display of a link station only if a link station is provided by VTAM.

Display Accounting Data

Accounting data provides traffic information about each partner in a session connection. It provides the number and size of data sent in each direction and the number of negative and position responses to data transmission.

To display accounting data for a session

  1. Enter A beside a session in the NTS : Session List.

The NTS : Session Accounting panel appears.
