6.2.1 Tivoli NetView Performance Monitor (NPM)

Tivoli NetView Performance Monitor (NPM) is an operational
performance tool used to monitor and manage day-to-day
network operations. Its data collection subsystem has the
following collection functions:

o Network collection gathers load, performance, NTRI
(Network Token Ring Interface), and NPSI (NCP Packet
Switching Interface) data in the Network Control
      Program (NCP).

o Session collection gathers response time and load data
      in the host computer.

o Network session accounting collection gathers
accounting (traffic volumes and connect time) data in
the Network Control Program (NCP) for network resources
belonging to an NCP's boundary function, for example,
terminals and distributed hosts defined to the NCP.

o Network gateway accounting collection gathers
accounting (traffic volumes and connect time) data in
      gateway NCPs for cross-network sessions.

NPM writes network and session data to SMF as a type 28
record. For the VM versions of NPM, the SMF type 28
equivalent log record is written to the CMS files named in
the FNMLOG1 and FNMLOG2 FILEDEF statements in the NPM startup
EXEC. For CA MICS to process this data, you must transport
these CMS data sets to your CA MICS MVS host.

In addition, you must make minor changes to the INPUTSMF
member of prefix.MICS.PARMS to cause the OS file containing
your VM NPM data to be concatenated into the SMF input stream
for the DAY056 step of your CA MICS DAILY update job. These
changes are described in Section 7.3.2 of this guide. After
running a JCLGENU job to regenerate the JCL to your CA MICS
DAILY update job, you will be able to process the network
monitor data from your VM hosts.
