Download a Windows 98 (SE) Boot Image and Prepare a 1.44 MB Windows 98 (SE) Boot Disk Using

  1. Download a Windows 98 (SE) boot image from the Internet. Download the Windows 98 (SE) boot floppy disk (without RAMDISK support), for example, wbootess.exe, and execute the program. A write-enabled floppy disk must be in the floppy disk drive. Executing wbootess.exe creates a Win98SE boot disk.
  2. Check if the sys.com, smartdrv.exe, and format.com files are on the floppy. If you use the Microsoft client from the Microsoft FTP server, check whether the emm386.exe and himem.sys files are on the floppy. No other applications should be on the floppy.

Windows 98 (SE) is the recommended platform for creating the boot floppy, but you can also use DOS 6.2 or Windows 95.

Important! When installing an OS on a computer using FAT32, Windows 98 (SE) is required.

Note: If you require a system partition for the OS installation greater than 2 GB, FAT32 is necessary and you should generate the DOS boot floppy on a Windows 98 (SE) system. Nevertheless, whether the DOS is FAT32-enabled or not, when you install an operating system of the Windows NT line the disk partitions are converted to NTFS during the installation by default.
