Create a Data Movement Rule

You use the Data Movement Rule Editor to document the data movement maintenance rules associated with the tables in your model. The Data Movement feature is available in a physical model when you select the Data Movement check box on the General tab in the Model Editor.

To create a data movement rule

  1. Click Data Movement Rules on the Model menu.

    The Data Movement Rule Editor opens.

  2. Click the New New icon in property editors to create a new object icon on the toolbar and work with the following options:

    Note: Use the Enter filter text text box to filter a very large list of names to edit an existing data movement rule.

    Name

    Specifies the name of the rule.

    Type

    Specifies the type of rule. Select from the drop-down list; valid values are Refresh, Append, Backup, Recovery, Archiving, and Purge.

  3. Click the Attachment tab and select the tables you want to attach to the rule.
  4. (Optional) Click the Definition tab and enter a definition you want to associate with the data movement rule.
  5. (Optional) Click the Where Used tab to review where the selected data movement rule is used.
  6. (Optional) Click the UDP tab to work with user-defined properties for the data movement rule.
  7. (Optional) Click the Notes tab to view history information and view or edit user notes.
  8. Click Close.

    The data movement rule is saved and the Data Movement Rule Editor closes.
