The following return codes are returned from the system's scratch routines. It is a list of the most common return codes encountered.

The VTOC of the volume did not contain the format-1 DSCB for the data set to be scratched.
A password is required in order to delete the data set, but no password was supplied.
The expiration date for the data set has not been reached.
Permanent I/O error.
