Resources

Resources are the physical and logical elements used by the service provider as part of the services it provides. Examples of resources include server, switch, hub, router, helpdesk or any other measurable element. Multiple resources can be defined as part of a resource group, which is then treated as another resource, or can be a member of another resource group.

The Service Delivery CMDB is not limited to technical IT resources. When defining a resource model, logical resource definitions, such as locations belonging to a region or process steps belonging to a process definition, are also included. In wireless telecommunication environments, resources could include BSC, SGSN, headquarters of customers, regions, etc. In wired telecommunication environments, resources could include switches, hubs and MPLS components.

Equivalent definitions of resources are configuration items and assets in ITIL terminology.

Resources are the subject for measurements and data gathered by the adapters from the underlying data sources in a form of events. For example, an availability event is created and sent to CA Business Service Insight to describe the availability of a certain resource of type server.

Resources are used in the business logic of the metrics as part of the registration process to define the set of events that is required to the calculation of the provided service level. In order to support the link between the business obligations into the resource model, the association to contract parties and services as well as grouping definitions may be kept for each resource.

The following attributes describe a resource in CA Business Service Insight: Name, display name, description, resource type(s), associating with contract parties, association with services and resource group membership.

In addition custom attributes such as location, cost and usage information can be added dynamically to the resource and resource group definition.

A resource and resource group can be defined as not effective for a certain time period. This affects the business logic calculation in a way that no data is taken into consideration in the calculation during the non-effective period.
