SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 x86_64

You can install this distro in Linux appliances.

Follow these steps:

Upload the installation DVD to the /vol/_impex/ directory.

Open the grid shell and initialize the installation with the following command:

util iso2class app_name=SLES-11_x64 install_size=5G console_type=graphic iso_volume1=SLES-11-SP2-DVD-x86_64-GM-DVD1.iso os=linux-64 virt_mode=xen_hvm,vmware cpu=0.5 mem=1.5G bw=1M

The following prompt appears:

When you have finished installing from iso_volume1 and are ready to reboot so that remaining volume(s) become available, press [Enter]

Access the AppLogic GUI, select the SLES-11_x64 application, and click the Login (graphic) icon.
The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) installation wizard displays a series of screens for you to select your preferences.
For some screens, you can make your own choices or accept default values, but for the following screens, select the following values:
1. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server initial screen: select Installation, and press Enter.
2. Media Check: click Next without making any changes.
3. Installation Mode: select New Installation, and click Next.
4. Server Base Scenario: select Virtual Machine, and click Next.
5. Installation Settings: click Partitioning.
6. Preparing Hard Disk: select Custom Partitioning, and click Next.
7. Use the following settings to define the first primary partition:
  - Expert Partitioner: Double-click the /dev/hda device, and click Add.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: select Primary Partition, and click Next.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: select Custom Size, specify 2GB for size, and click Next.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: for File System, select ext3, and for Mount Point select /.
  - Click Fstab Options.
    The Fstab Options dialog opens.
  - Select UUID, accept other defaults, and click OK.
  You are returned to the Expert Partitioner screen.
8. Use the following settings to define another primary partition (all values are the same except Mount Point, which is now set to /usr):
  - Expert Partitioner: Double-click the /dev/hda device, and click Add.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: select Primary Partition, and click Next.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: select Custom Size, specify 3GB for size, and click Next.
  - Add Partition on /dev/hda: for File System, select ext3, and for Mount Point select /usr.
  - Click Fstab Options.
    The Fstab Options dialog opens.
  - Select UUID, accept other defaults, and click OK.
  You are returned to the Expert Partitioner screen.
9. Click Accept, and click Yes in response to the warning.
10. Installation Settings: click Expert tab.
11. Click Booting, and click the Boot Loader Installation tab, select Boot from Master Boot Record, deselect all others, and click OK.
12. Installation Settings: click the Overview tab.
13. Click Software, and select only Base System, 32-bit Runtime Environment, Help and Support, and Minimal Systems.
14. Click Details.
  A dialog appears.
15. Click the Search tab, search for dhcp, locate the dhcp-client package, and select it.
16. Search for firewall, deselect the SuSEfirewall2 package, and click Accept to close the dialog.
  A summary screen appears displaying all changed packages.
17. Click Continue.
18. Installation Settings: click Install.
19. Confirm Installation: click Install.
  A progress screen appears.
20. Perform Installation: Wait for the installation to complete, and click OK to reboot.
Re-open the application GUI to continue the configuration and complete the SUSE installation wizard:
1. Password for the System Administrator "root": set the password for the root user, and click Next.
2. Hostname and Domain Name: uncheck Change Hostname via DHCP, and click Next.
3. Network Configuration: select Use Following Configuration, and click Next.
4. Test Internet Connection: select No, and click Next.
5. Network Services Configuration: select Use Following Configuration, and click Next.
6. User Authentication Method: select Local, and click Next.
7. New Local User: leave blank, click Next, and click Yes to confirm.
8. Release Notes: review, and click Next.
9. Hardware Configuration: select Use Following Configuration, and click Next.
10. Installation Completed: click Finish, and click Continue in response to the warning about no running network detected.
  The SUSE installation wizard displays a series of messages.
11. Wait for the Linux prompt to appear, and then close the application GUI.
Complete the installation:
1. Return to the grid shell.
  The following prompt still appears:
```
When you have finished installing from iso_volume1 and are ready to reboot so that remaining volume(s) become available, press [Enter]
```
2. Press Enter, Y, Enter.
  The following prompt appears:
```
When you have finished with the installation, press [Enter] to continue
```
3. Press Enter, Y, Enter.
  A prompt appears to specify whether to install msi/APK.
4. Press 2, Enter to select NOT to install the msi/APK.
  A prompt appears to specify whether to call hvm2pv now.
5. Press 2, Enter to select NOT to call hvm2pv now.
  You now should have an SLES 11 application named SLES-11_x64 running.
  
  Notes:
  - The SLES 11 default kernel only supports HVM mode.
  - SLES uses GRUB1, so you can enable either xen_pv or xen_hvm modes, but not both.
6. Enter the following command to stop the application:
```
app stop SLES-11_x64
```
7. Specify the device schema:
  - Open the application GUI, right-click on the singleton, and select Modify Boundary.
  - On the General tab, in the Virtualization section, click Advanced, select IDE and /dev/hdX, and click OK.
  - On the Volumes tab, select the consecutive hd* (hda,hdb,hdc...) devices for all volumes (where hda is the boot volume), click OK, and save the application.
8. Enter the following command to call the hvm2pv utility:
```
util hvm2pv name=SLES-11_x64:main.iso2class virt_mode=xen_hvm
```
  The following prompt appears:
```
Is the pre-requisite software installed?
```
9. Press Y, Enter.
  A confirmation prompt appears.
10. Press Y, Enter to confirm the SUSE Linux OS and 64-bit architecture.
  A prompt appears to set up a new root password.
11. Press N, Enter to NOT set up a password.
  A prompt appears to press any key when ready.
12. Press Enter to boot the appliance in PV mode.
  A prompt appears to delete the original boot volume.
13. Press Y, Enter to perform the cleanup.
You now have the managed SLES 11 x64 appliance capable of booting in HVM mode.
To enable the text console for PV and HVM modes, execute the following commands on the running appliance:
```
sed -i 's/^#S0/S0/g' /etc/inittab && init q
```
