Report Description
TMSSMF creates TMS REPORT-66 SMF RECOVERY UTILITY OUTPUT to document the actions taken in analyzing and capturing SMF data for CA 1 recovery purposes. Both DETAIL and SUMMARY modes are supported. In SUMMARY mode (which is the default), TMSSMF writes only the total number of records that you select. In DETAIL mode, a report line is written documenting every volume or secondary file (DSNB) to be recovered. The utility prints only the volumes or secondary files that fall within the specified dates and times.
Operational Considerations
Consider the following points when using TMSSMF:
- Back up the TMC before and after running the jobs to process the transactions that TMSSMF creates.
- Stop all tape processing when running the TMSUPDTE and TMSAGGR utilities. At a minimum, do not run the CA 1 daily utilities, TMSPTRS, or the TMSAPEC subtask of the CTS address space. If tape jobs continue running during your processing of the TMSUPDTE and TMSAGGR recovery transactions, any problems are more difficult to investigate.
- The TMSSMF utility may not be able to recover all tape activity during the outage.
- After running the TMSUPDTE and TMSAGGR jobs to process the recovery transactions, start the TMSAPEC (or TMSPTRS) utility to verify the TMC. You can also use a TMSGRW or CA EARL job to print the volumes and files that are created during the outage.
- Tape jobs that ran when CA 1 was not active and that did not have an expiration date use the value that is specified in the TMOOPTxx RP system option.
- If TMSUPDTE ends with a CC=12 and the following message is issued in TMS REPORT-14 *** vvvvvv IS NOT SCRATCH AND SCRATCH KEYWORD IS SPECIFIED, investigate the data on the volser. The volser could have been overwritten while TMS was not active.
- If tape jobs using DISP=MOD processing are run while CA 1 is not active, they cause an End of Volume condition. To address chaining issues, manually update the secondary volumes. The TMSSMF utility cannot create secondary volume chains from the records that SMF creates for DISP=MOD processing.
- Work files that are created during the times specified in TMSSMF are removed from scratch status. An expiration date of the current date is applied (unless TMSEXPDT processing overrides them). With the next execution of TMSCLEAN, the tape is scratched.
