For this example, assume that the CA 1 Vault Management System (VMS) uses the locations DRA1, SAFE, and PERM, and the VMS pseudo-vaults LIBR and LIB, for off-site storage. The control statements below will produce a report that lists the volumes marked out-of-area to non-VMS locations (locations not owned by the Vault Management System).
You can use this report to inventory the tape library. Tapes that have been returned can be checked in and expired, if desired, to allow them to be reused. Tapes that have been out-of-area for quite some time and have not been returned may need to be replaced if it seems unlikely that they will be returned.
The report will provide the following information on each record selected for output: volume serial number, location ID of the off-site volume, date on which the volume moved off-site, first 10 characters of the data set name and the expiration date. Dates are printed in the format 'DDMMM YYYY'. According to the delivery instructions, the report is delivered to the tape library administrator.
