The FORMAT control statement specifies the TMC volume ranges to be formatted and the number of TMC DSNBs to be formatted. Data on control statements cannot extend past position 71. Multiple FORMAT control statements may be used. This control statement is required.
The format for this control statement is:
FORMAT TMC=(range1,range2,...,rangen),DSNB=n
Control Statement Definition
Identifies the control statement function. FORMAT can begin in any position and must be followed by a space.
Specifies that the ranges indicated by range1 through rangen are to be written on the TMC. The format of rangen is the 1- to 7-digit low-limit internal volume serial number followed by the 1- to 7-digit, high-limit internal volume serial number. The expression TMC=(rangen) must not be split across two control statements. If more ranges are required than can fit on one control statement, specify additional FORMAT control statements. See the control statement examples for an illustration.
TMC=(1000-9999,25000-49999,...,100000-103000)
The ranges represent all of the ranges in the new TMC. Only numeric volume serial numbers are valid in this control statement; alphanumeric volume serial numbers must be coded according to their CA 1 internal numeric translation.
A maximum of 52 nonconsecutive volume serial ranges can be specified, and each range must be separated by a comma.
Specifies that n number of DSNBs are to be written on the TMC. The expression DSNB=n must not be split across two control statements. While more than one occurrence of the expression DSNB=n is allowed, the last occurrence is the one which TMSFORMT retains. The maximum number of secondary data sets that can be tracked may be determined by the formula found in the Installation Guide.
Note: There is a logical limit of 9,999,999 volume records and 6,750,000 DSNB records which can be formatted in the TMC. However, the physical limit is smaller. The limit for the allocation of a sequential data set is X'FFFF' tracks or 65,535 decimal tracks. This is equal to 4,369 cylinders on a 3390. The total number of volume records plus half of the total number of DSNB records (there are two DSNB records on each physical record) must be equal to or less than 3,735,492 for an un-blocked TMC (10,223,460 for a TMC blocked at 8840). Keep in mind, there are 3 control records.
For example, you can format on a TMC blocked at 8840:
