The CA 1 TMC must have free (unused) DSNB records available to track secondary files on tape. Two checks are provided to monitor the availability of free DSNBs as a percentage of the total number of DSNBs defined in the TMC. This first, low threshold check provides early notification that DSNBs are being used up. A second check is also provided to trigger a medium level alert, if steps are not taken to either free DSNBs by scratching tapes or add more DSNBs by extending the TMC. The default interval for this check is every 30 minutes and the exception interval is every 30 minutes.
As a best practice, you should have enough extra DSNB records formatted in the TMC to handle any unexpected increases in the number of tapes created containing secondary data sets. This check helps you determine if you should extend the TMC to add more DSNBs.
This check accepts one parameter: LOW_CHECK_THDSNB_MINUS(nn)
The value specified in LOW_CHECK_THDSNB_MINUS(nn) will be subtracted from the percentage specified in THDSNB in CTAPOPTNs to determine when to trigger this alert. This parameter must be an integer in the range of 1-30. The default is: LOW_CHECK_THDSNB_MINUS(20).

The TMSXTEND utility provides the ability to add DSNB records to the TMC, and other volume range or DSNB maintenance.
Note: For more information about extending the TMC, see the CA 1 Utilities and Reports Reference Guide.
