Cloud gateway appliances, like Riverbed Whitewater, provide local storage, data compression, data de-duplication, data encryption, and access to public cloud storage like Amazon S3 and Glacier.
Data is retained on the local disk cache as long as possible and can be evicted using algorithms such as a least recently used algorithm. If the data is later needed, it is retrieved from the cloud. Determine the amount of local disk cache through a planning process outlined in this document. A properly sized local disk cache minimizes delays getting data from the cloud.
