CA IT PAM Best Practices

 Updated: June 20, 2011

This page provides best practices and other links that can help guide you in the installation, configuration and use of CA IT Process Automation Manager (CA IT PAM). Best Practice documents are designed to supplement the existing product documentation. The recommendations provided in the Best Practice documents are based on both in-house testing and on-site experiences, however, you should familiarize yourself with the support and feedback policies regarding the best practices presented here.

Updates to this page - including new documents and revisions to existing documents - are in progress and will occur frequently. Be sure to check this link often for the lastest information.

What is CA IT PAM?

CA IT PAM provides you with the tools to design, build, orchestrate, manage, and report on automated processes that support IT operators and production environments. It includes the following components:

CA IT PAM Connectors

CA IT PAM Connectors integrate CA and 3rd party products into workflow processes and also provide bridge services from CA/3rd party products to CA products/solutions embedding CA Catalyst. In addition to the Connectors that are provided on the CA IT PAM installation media, the following Connectors are available for download.

Important Note for CA IT PAM r3.0 CP01: The following connectors can be used with CA IT PAM r2.1, r2.2, r3.0 and r3.0 CP01. If you have already installed these connectors in your CA IT PAM instance there is no need to re-install. However, if you are performing a fresh connector install into a CA IT PAM r3.0 CP01 instance, you must use the new connector installers (r1.5), as the prior installer versions will fail.

    UCF\Catalyst Connectors

Beginning with CA Process Automation r3.0 SP1, it is possible to make use of UCF\Catalyst connectors within CA Process Automation. The CA Process Automation UCF-USM connector, together with a patch to the r3.0 SP1, or CA Process Automation r3.1 by itself, allows the surfacing of implemented CRUD functionality for any Catalyst connector into CA Process Automation processes. Users may optionally deploy their UCF\Catalyst connectors outside of CA Spectrum Service Assurance r2.5 by using the CA UCF Connector Container.

CA IT PAM Web Service Utilities

The CA IT PAM Web Service Utilities are a field developed set of utilities designed to simplify interaction and integration with CA IT PAM. The package supports interaction at two levels:

Using these utilities you should be able to initiate, control and track the progress of processes defined to CA IT PAM from the command line or external application very quickly.

Important Note Regarding Support for CA IT PAM Web Services Utilities

Every reasonable effort has been made to test these contents using the available resources, however, the CA IT PAM Web Services Utilities are field developed and are provided as-is. Questions and feedback regarding use of these utilities can be forwarded to ITPAM Best Practices Feedback Link. CA Technologies will make a best effort attempt to assist you in resolving problems. Support will attempt to provide help but, in some cases, may only be able to log the problem for later updates to the CA IT PAM Web Services Utilities.

Additional updates may be made and any discovered defects in the utilites will be corrected or removed as we become aware of issues so you are encouraged to check the latest online copy of a best practice before calling support. There is no formal service level for field utilities. If an FDU problem you encounter has been corrected in a newer GA release of a CA product, support may direct you to that release.

Service Management Content Pack for ITIL ®

CA has developed a “foundation” set of service management processes based on ITIL and corresponding pre-built workflows using CA’s ITPAM solution, which Customers can use, review and refine to meet their specific requirements. The foundation processes have been built to meet the needs of large, complex organizations; “refinement” to simplify for individual Customer situations may be required.
