Redistribution Servers and the Content Update Process

Redistribution Servers and the content update process work together to provide content updates as follows:

  1. In a smaller organization, the CA TM Server uses the Internet to poll the CA Content Update Server for signature and program updates based on the scheduled interval you define in your Content Update policy.

    If a larger organization using a tiered implementation, one or a small number of of Redistribution Servers contact the CA Content Update Server to check for updates.

  2. The Content Update Server verifies the status of the license on the machine requesting the updates.

    Note: The license is only checked when downloading signature and engine updates. If the license is valid, the download proceeds. The license is never checked when downloading software updates.

  3. The machine that that pulled the updates from the CA Content Update Server now updates its own local CA TM Agent instance, and then put the updates in the appropriate holding area.
  4. After the hold time you have defined in your Content Update policy expires, the updates are moved to the hosting area and are made available to other Redistribution Servers and/or client machines.
