This Redistribution Server is responsible for downloading new updates over the Internet from the CA Content Update Server and making them available to other Redistribution Servers and all of the client machines in the organization.
In a small business with less than 500 client machines in a single location, you may choose to use a single Redistribution Server.
In a tiered implementation with multiple office locations, one (or a small number of) Redistribution Servers download the updates from the CA Content Update Server. These servers provide the updates to a larger group of Redistribution Servers in the next tier located within the corporate headquarters or at regional offices. This tiered architecture can be repeated until you have a sufficient number of Redistribution Servers that can provide updates to all client computers with a minimal impact on network resources. Using multiple Redistribution Servers also provides high availability so that if a single Redistribution Server is down, it does not cause a major gap in update coverage.
Recommendation: If using a tiered implementation, plan the layout of your tiered Redistribution Servers before you create the Content Update policies for your organization. Having predetermined which machines will host Redistribution Servers lets you add the servers to your Content Update policy in order of preference and also ensures there are multiple locations from which client machines can retrieve updates.
