The following are the Include-Exclude processing rules:
Note: If you put entries in the volume list, the device list, and the DFSMS Storage Groups list, remember that applying the first list results in a scope of what will be processed. Applying the second and third lists can only narrow that scope further, they can never expand it. To be more specific, the include entries in the second or third list never expand the scope established by the include entries in the first list. When the volume, the device, and the DFSMS Storage Groups lists are being used, the final scope is to process only those volumes that match the volume inclusion list and reside on devices in the device inclusion list and the group list. It is not an or condition that expands the scope. If this logic confuses you, you should stick to using only one of the lists, but not two or all three. Alternatively, you can use all lists but specify only exclusion entries, never any inclusion entries.
Hint: Think of these three lists as three gates in a funnel as shown in the following diagram. Only Volumes that pass through Gate 1 (the Online Volumes List) get to Gate 2 (the Online Devices (CUAs) List). Only Volumes that pass through both Gate 1 and Gate 2 get to Gate 3 (the DFSMS Storage Groups List). Only Volumes that pass through Gate 1, Gate 2, and Gate 3 are processed. That is, only Volumes that pass through the previous gate are reviewed to see if they can pass the next gate. Each gate can impose more restrictions, letting fewer Volumes through the funnel to be processed.

Example 1:
START-EXCLUDE-VOL Online Volumes INCL=TMP/ START-EXCLUDE-CUA Online Devices (CUAs) INCL=8/ START-DFSMS-STOR-GR SMS Storage Groups INCL=SMD/
In this example only volumes with a VolSer starting with TMP and a CUA starting with 8 and that belong to Storage Groups beginning with SMD will be included. Probably very few volumes, if any, will be displayed in the associated objects.
Example 2:
START-EXCLUDE-VOL Online Volumes EXCL=TMP/ START-EXCLUDE-CUA Online Devices (CUAs) EXCL=8/ START-DFSMS-STOR-GR SMS Storage Groups EXCL=SMD/
In this example volumes with a VolSer starting with TMP, a CUA starting with 8, or that belong to Storage Groups beginning with SMD will be excluded. All other volumes will be displayed in the associated objects.
Important! If you use INCL=/ in the START-EXCLUDE-VOL section or the START-EXCLUDE-CUA section or if you leave these two sections empty, both SMS and non-SMS volumes are included. If you use INCL=/ in the START-DFSMS-STOR-GR section, only SMS volumes are included. If you leave the START-DFSMS-STOR-GR section empty, both SMS and non-SMS volumes are included.
