CA VM:Secure provides support for the IBM Systems Management Application Programming Interface (SMAPI) component of z/VM. With this support, a set of interface routines allow you to use CA VM:Secure to perform directory management functions called as part of the Systems Management API.
This support replaces calls to IBM-supplied routines with calls to CA VM:Secure commands. After you set up a Systems Management API server environment, you will use the instructions in this chapter to add CA VM:Secure specific components that receive control when the SMAPI server environment receives a request from a SMAPI client.
For more information about the server and the Systems Management APIs, see the IBM Systems Management Application Programming manual. IBM provides two different versions of SMAPI, listed as follows:
This is the original version which was introduced in z/VM 4.3.0. As the name suggests, it uses the standard RPC protocol for communications. The RPC SMAPI server support will not be available for z/VM 6.2.0 and later releases.
This server was introduced in z/VM 5.3.0. It uses a simpler socket based protocol to communicate.
Note: CA VM:Secure supports both servers. You must select the specific server implementation which is supported by the client programming services you are using.
