Audience--Administrators

This book was written for all system administrators who are responsible for performing the following CA® VM:Backup™ functions:

• Manage the daily operation of the product
• Control user authorizations and access to the product
• Define how the product processes backups and restores
• Start the restoration of Shared File Systems (SFS/BFS)
• Create or change job template, exception, and exclusion files for backup and restore jobs

You must be authorized as a system administrator in the CA VM:Backup system to perform the tasks and enter the commands described in this book. If you have System Administrator authorization, you are authorized automatically to perform user and operator restore functions.

This book assumes that you have the following knowledge:

• Familiarity with VM and CMS
• Knowledge of the naming conventions that are used for the following elements:
  • The CMS files
  • Byte File System (BFS) files
  • Shared File System (SFS) directories
  • The BFS directories
• Familiarity with the functions of the product
• An understanding of how you want CA VM:Backup to run in your data center

If you are not familiar with these aspects of CA VM:Backup, consult someone that has this knowledge.

This book presents information by system administrator functions and describes how to use the system administrator screens to perform the functions. The book explains menus and screens in the order of their appearance on the System Administrator Main Menu.

Use this material with the System Programmer Reference, which explains the product and its administration. The System Programmer Reference contains reference information for doing the following tasks:

• Perform CA VM:Backup programming tasks
• Customize CA VM:Backup to fit site-specific requirements
• Perform any required administrative operations.
