IBM 3590 Tape Drives

All IBM 3590 drives use the same media, and the tapes come in two lengths:

Older IBM drives cannot read 3590 tapes, and 3590 drives cannot read older tape formats.

Density names ending in C denote hardware data compression. Density names ending in B denote that hardware data compression is not in use.
