DASDtapes are less vulnerable to external influences than physical tapes. Problems such as I/O errors and improper tape handling can render a physical tape unusable. DASDtapes are not as vulnerable to these types of problems.
The amount of data lost when a DASDtape minidisk is lost can be greater than the amount of data lost when one physical tape becomes unusable. Keep in mind that a minidisk used to store data can contain all your backup data. If the entire pack is destroyed and the minidisk is unusable, all of your data is inaccessible. If a tape is unusable, only the data on that tape is lost, not all of your backup data. Therefore, the amount of data lost if a physical tape is destroyed may be considerably less than the amount of data lost if a DASDtape minidisk is lost.
