The BACKUP INDEX file, which contains variable length records, provides a sequential index to the DETAIL data files. Each record in the BACKUP INDEX file is a time-ordered list of backup jobs, all stamped with the date and time of the DUMPJOB file associated with the backed-up data. Each record also contains starting and ending pointers into the associated DETAIL files by name and offset for the minidisk, file space, or directory.
