CA SRM completes scheduled automatic and unplanned manual data collections of the various objects in your IT environment such as individual computers, disk arrays, backup applications, databases, messaging applications, and so on. CA SRM maintains the latest measurements (data) of these objects in its local database. The data is saved until the next scheduled automatic or next manual data collection by the CA SRM data collection agents, when the new data overwrites the old data.
Before overwriting old data, CA SRM stores the trendable data in a separate Microsoft Access database under the framework of the trending mechanism. The CA SRM schema defines which parameters are measured and only this data is transferred to the trend database. The information is consolidated and saved so you can follow the system trends.
Storage and System Administrators track the variations in the values of the stored data to carry out activities such as planning for future procurements, tallying chargebacks to departments based on system usage, identifying trends in hardware and software usage, identifying highs and lows in usage statistics, and so on.
While data in the trend database can be left intact for a specified period of time, the data loses relevance as it ages, and the data requires large amounts of capacity to store. Administrators must configure their trend consolidations to collect enough data for an accurate picture of the IT system, but balance that amount of data against their storage capabilities.
CA SRM has a consolidation mechanism where you can specify how long your trend data is retained. Beyond that point in time, the data is consolidated into three data points: Average, Minimum, and Maximum in an interval that you also specify. This way, the data from a specified period of time is consolidated into these three data points; weekly, monthly, and yearly, for example.
Because the data loses relevance as it ages, the trend consolidation service maximizes the data relevance by maintaining fewer and fewer data points as the data ages, as well as helping to reduce the amount of storage used.
The trend objects and their corresponding schema data is what CA SRM Web Reporter uses to build your system's reports. You must have a solid understanding of the trend schema data to get the full use of this application. For detailed information on the tend objects and the schema tables, see the Appendix Trend and Schema Data.
