Interface Utilization/Discard Rate - Out Trend

The Interface Utilization/Discard Rate - Out Trend view shows you a trend chart comparing interface packet discard rates and utilization levels in the outbound direction. If available, events are shown as flags to indicate the time that events were reported.

Projections of utilization and discards help you spot trends that can cause problems in the future. Use projections to plan interface capacity upgrades to meet increasing data transmission requirements.

Note: You can edit Interface Trend views to display rate and volume statistics. By default, utilization is shown as a percentage of interface capacity.

By default, the Interface Utilization/Discard Rate - Out Trend view includes the following information:

Device

Identifies the device that is associated with the selected interface.

Interface

Is the name of the interface.

Average Utilization Out

Is the outbound utilization of the interface, expressed as a percentage of interface capacity.

Average Utilization Out Projection

Projects the trend in future average interface utilization levels, using the outbound interface utilization data in the requested timeframe.

Average Percent Discards Out

Is the average rate of packet discards, expressed as a percentage of outbound traffic on the interface during the reporting period.

Average Percent Discards Out Projection

Projects the trend in future interface discard ratios, using the outbound discard data in the requested timeframe.

Edit Interface Trend View Settings

You can change several settings for a trend chart view. In addition to providing a new title, you can show or hide some of the trend lines and select another managed item context for the data. Trend views support the Zoom feature for time frame selection.

Follow these steps:

1. Click the Options (gear) icon on the view, and select Edit from the menu.

   The view Settings dialog opens.

2. Change the view Title or Subtitle to reflect the modified view.
3. Select whether to show the metric as a rate (N per second) or as a total count.
4. Select a Resolution option.

   The Resolution is the amount of time that each data point in the chart represents.

5. Select another Metric Value from the drop-down list. Select one of the following options:

   Utilization by Percentage

   Utilization as a percentage of interface capacity.

   Utilization by Rate

   A throughput measurement shown in bits per second.

   Utilization by Volume

   A count of bytes over the polling interval that is not divided by a time factor.

6. Select Show or Hide from the drop-down menus to control the display of any of the following trend lines or data points in the chart:
   • Projection - The line that plots projected average values for twice the current time period.
   • 95th Percentile - The line that plots the values in the top 5% of all measurements that were taken during the reporting interval.
   • Events - The data points that show when events were reported during the reporting interval.
   • Goal Line - The line that plots the value you selected as the goal for the metric in this view.

   Note: Not all trend line options are available for all trend chart types.

7. Set a value for the Goal Line if you selected to show it.

   Goal lines serve as visual indicators of fixed metric values. For example, select a value within range of a critical threshold so that you can determine at a glance whether performance is approaching a degraded level.

8. Supply a label for the Goal Line to identify the value you selected.
9. Click to select another managed item in the Context Settings area.

   Data from the new item will be shown in the view.

10. Select the scope of your changes from the Apply Changes drop-down. Select one of the following options:
    • For All Tenant Users: Saves the changes so that they are only available to users associated with your tenant (possibly the Default Tenant).
    • My User Account: Saves the changes to your user account as a default for this view.
    • My Current Session: Reverts the changes when you log out.

    Note: The availability of these options depends on your user account role rights.

11. Click Save.

    The view is refreshed to reflect your updates.
