Data Aggregator collects and stores raw rate data with the granularity determined by the polling interval (as configured in the monitoring profile). In addition, Data Aggregator performs regular hourly, daily, and weekly data rollups, resulting in the consolidated representation of collected rate data. Because the hourly rollup data takes up considerably less storage space when compared to as-polled data, it can typically be stored for longer periods of time.
As part of the view rendering process, Data Aggregator returns query results to CA Performance Center that match the requested resolution setting, if possible. But if the time range (the time between the Start Time and the End Time) exceeds the data retention period for the required type of data, views use the next most granular rollup that includes data from the requested time range.
Depending on a number of factors, the views that are displayed in CA Performance Center show either “as polled” data or rollup data. First, the time range that is selected for a CA Performance Center view determines a default data resolution value. Next, the resolution value, such as 1-Hour, determines the type of data that is used for rendering a given view.
To illustrate this behavior, we can use the default retention configuration of 45 days of as-polled data and 730 days of hourly rollup data. If you set your time range to a period starting more than 730 days ago, an exception occurs, and the CA Performance Center view indicates the problem with a red error bar. If you set your time range to a period starting more than 45 days ago and also set the resolution to 5-Minute, the view is constructed using hourly rollups.
