Directory searches take place when z/OS needs to locate a member in a concatenation of one or more partitioned data sets, or libraries. These members may be program load modules. Load modules contain executable instructions, and they are invoked again and again to perform certain functions. Besides load modules, libraries may have members that contain macro instructions, JCL, CLISTs, program source code, ISPF panels, or any other kind of data.
Directory searches are initiated by a component of z/OS called Program Management, or by programs and applications such as TSO sessions, IMS applications, or programs that users employ.
