Protocol groups act as filters for report data. The administrator can set up custom protocol groups that contain the protocols for particular types of network traffic.
For example, suppose that operators want to report on network traffic for different types of applications, such as email, videoconferencing, VoIP, and streaming media. No default protocol groups are defined for this purpose, so the administrator creates a custom protocol group for each of the application types. Each protocol group includes all the protocol values that are used in the enterprise for the target applications.
Operators can filter report data by using the default protocol groups that CA Network Flow Analysis automatically maintains and the custom protocol groups. By using a protocol group as a filter, operators avoid adding filters for each protocol.
Note: In a multi-domain environment, the contents of protocol groups are displayed with any domain-specific custom protocol names groups that administrators have created.
The following topics show CA Network Flow Analysis administrators how to create a shell protocol group, configure the protocol group, then review and edit the protocol group settings.
