1.1 Primary Areas of Application

The CA MICS Analyzer Option for VM/CMS provides data and
reporting capabilities that aid in the management of complex
VM systems in the following areas:

o Performance Management - It provides information that
allows you to examine and analyze specific VM and CMS
session workloads to pinpoint system and operational
problems. The ability to identify and correct these types
of problems significantly improves both system performance
and the level of service provided to system users.

o Operational Issues - You can track and monitor changes to
the operating configuration as well as specific system
events to ensure that resources are available and that
   defined procedures are being followed.

o Accounting and Chargeback - Analyzer files contain data in
a form that can be used for basic billing of system
resource usage. The data includes CPU time, I/O counts,
and counts of records transmitted between systems or to
remote work stations. A standard interface to CA MICS
Accounting and Chargeback permits accounting from VM, the
VM Remote Spooling and Communications Subsystem (RSCS),
the VM/VTAM Communications Network Application (VCNA), and
   CMS batch.

o Capacity Planning - The Analyzer maintains a database of
historical system usage and performance data that can be
used for growth trend projections at both the system and
organizational unit (for example, division or department)
   levels.

o System Availability and Reliability - Information provided
by the product can be used to monitor such events as when
and how often Control Program terminations occur.

o Management and Analytical Reporting - Users can group and
summarize information directly from the database to create
useful management and analytical reporting measures. They
can also generate reports that compare actual activity
   against established objectives for availability,
throughput, service and resource consumption. Detailed
reports and technical inquiries monitor such things as
swap/paging activity, channel utilization, and user
consumption characteristics. In addition to these
standard reports supplied with the system, users can
easily create custom reports through various online
facilities. Additional tools allow resummarization when
the summarized information in the database does not
   address specific reporting needs.
