New data fields can be established in any run. These fields can be used temporarily, printed in a report, or included in an output file. Their values can be used for selection and sorting or for other computations, in the same way as data values from the input file.
Work fields can be defined in the DEFINE, DECODE, or COMPUTE statements.
During the definition of the work field, format characteristics are assigned for the work field. These may be defined explicitly by you or the system default characteristics can be used. The work field retains the format for the rest of the run.
Format characteristics that are associated with a work field name are:
character, packed, numeric, binary, or hexadecimal
number of bytes
number of decimal positions
