Models and Assets

The CA APM repository contains two types of records that describe the basic characteristics of IT products. The two types of records are models and assets.

• A model describes a product type that you have purchased or may purchase.
• An asset describes a product that you own or may purchase. Assets are based on models. You can have many assets for one model. You define an asset based on a model, and the asset inherits the model attributes.

More than one asset can be based on the same model record. For example, if you own 100 laptops of a particular model, you would have one model record describing the laptop, and 100 asset records describing the individual laptop.
