Conventions
The diagrams in this chapter use the following conventions.
- Symbols--Figure 2.1 presents the symbols used in the diagrams for record types and db-keys.

- Pointers--For simplicity, most diagrams in this chapter illustrate only the next pointer and not the prior or owner pointers. Any examples with additional pointers are labeled accordingly.
- Terminology--The words record and set are used to mean record occurrence and set occurrence.
- Lettercase--The text of this chapter presents owner record occurrences in uppercase. Example: ENGLISH. The text of this chapter capitalizes member record occurrences. Example: English Literature.
