The RDW keyword controls the inclusion of the four-byte record descriptor word of variable length records in record positions 1 - 4. The first two bytes of the RDW contain the record's length + the length of the RDW, which is 4. This value is in hex. Bytes three and four contain low-values.
With RDW(Y), the RDW is made available to the current command and its keywords. For example, it is available to move to a specific position within a record, to query its value, or even compare it to another RDW.
