Specify a Data Type for a Domain

In a logical model, you can use the General tab in the Domain Editor to associate a data type with a domain. If you want to simply specify data type, use the Logical Data Type drop-down list in the Navigation Grid to select the logical data type to use for the selected domain.

To specify a data type for a domain

  1. Click Domains on the Model menu.

    The Domain Editor opens.

  2. Click the name of the domain in the Navigation Grid for which you want to specify a data type.

Note: To filter a large list of domains, enter the name (or the first few characters) of the domain for which you want to specify a data type in the Enter filter text box.

  3. Click the General tab and work with the following options:
    Logical Data Type

Specifies the logical data type for the domain. Select the data type to use from the drop-down list. If the selected data type requires a value for precision, scale, or both, enter the value inside the data type parentheses. For example, you can select the DECIMAL() data type and specify a precision of 2 and a scale of 10 inside the parentheses, to assign the data type DECIMAL(2,10) to the selected attribute. You can also inherit, override, or harden the data type by clicking the appropriate button:

Inherit Button for Restoring Property Inheritance Inherit

Specifies to inherit the domain data type.

    Override Property Inheritance Override

Specifies to override inheritance for the data type.

Harden Button for Hardening a Property or Name Harden

Specifies to harden the data type.

    Null Option

Specifies the Null option to assign to the data type. Select an option using the drop-down control.

  4. Click Close.

The data type is specified for the domain and the Domain Editor closes.
