File Types Supported

You can open and save model information in several different file types.

The file types you can open in this product are shown in the Files of Type list in the Open File dialog. The following describes the file types you can open:

ERWIN

Standard file format for r7 and later. Starting with r8.2, the *.erwin extension can also be used as a template file.

ERWIN_TMPL

A model file saved as a template for r7 and later.

XML

A metamodel saved as an Extensible Markup Language file. When you open a model saved in XML format, the data structure specified in the XML file is read, the database is automatically reverse engineered, and a matching data model diagram is created.

ERS

A physical database schema script text file. When you open a text file with this extension, the data structure specified in the text file is read, the database is automatically reverse engineered, and a matching data model diagram is created.

SQL

SQL DDL (Data Definition Language) schema script text file. When you open a text file with this extension, the data structure specified in the text file is read, the database is automatically reverse engineered, and a matching data model diagram is created.

DF (SQL)

Progress data definition text file. When you open a text file with this extension, the data structure specified in the text file is read, the database is automatically reverse engineered, and a matching data model diagram is created.

Note: In addition to the file types listed above, you can store models in a CA ERwin Data Modeler Workgroup Edition mart, or in a computer or SQL-based dictionary.

The file types you can save in this product are shown in the Save as type list in the Save As dialog. The file types you can save include:

XML Format
