Map Physical Data Types to Logical Data Types

The Data Type Standards Editor lets you map physical data types to logical data types, which is useful when you want to derive a new model from an existing model, or change the target DBMS.

To map physical data types to logical data types

  1. Click Standards, Data Type Standards on the Tools menu.

The Data Type Standards Editor opens.

Note: If you need to connect to a mart, click Connection on the Services menu and enter your connection information.

  2. Click Insert New Mapping on the Mapping menu.

A new window opens within the Data Type Standards Editor at the New Mapping tab.

  3. Select a source DBMS from the From drop-down, which is the source data type, then select LOGICAL from the To drop-down, which is the target data type.

The table is populated with the default physical to logical data type mapping, and the New Mapping tab is renamed with the data type mapping you just created, for example, Oracle 10/11 to LOGICAL.

  4. Review the default data type mapping and make any required changes, then either click Save on the File menu to save the data type standards model (*.dsm) file locally, or click Save on the Services menu to save the file to the mart.

The data type standards model file is saved and remains open.

Note: If you try to save the file without making any changes to the default data type mapping, you are alerted that no changes are detected, and the *.dsm file will not be saved.

  5. Click Exit on the File menu.

The Data Type Standards Editor closes.
