THE FOLLOWING DATA SET NAME IS INVALID: DSN (ddd), CHARACTER AT POSITION (nn) IS IN ERROR: (variable text explaining the error)
Reason:
The character at position (nn) within data set (ddd) cannot be used. The variable text indicates one of the following:
- Each data set qualifier (node or index) as well as the simple name of the data set must begin with an alphabetic or national character.
- Each qualifier or simple name must be from one to eight characters in length.
- The second through eighth characters must consist of alphabetics, numerics, nationals, hyphens, or plus-zeros (12-0 card punches).
- A data set name cannot end with a period.
- A data set name cannot contain embedded blanks.
- The relative GDG number must start in or after position 2, and in or before position 36. All generation groups require at least a single- character GDG index, hence the position 2 requirement. The absolute generation number with its preceding period occupies nine characters, hence the position 36 requirement in order to fit the absolute name into the maximum 44 characters for a data set name.
- The relative GDG number (the value between the two parentheses) must be numeric.
- The closing parenthesis around a relative GDG number is missing.
- If restoring a non-IBM-standard data set name, you may need to bypass some of the data set name validation.
