A character string is a sequence of any EBCDIC characters. The length of the string is determined by the length attribute of the column. The data type for a character string is CHARACTER. The default value for the CHARACTER data type length is one byte. Also see Data Types.
In extended mode you can use character strings to represent dates, times, and timestamps. See Character String Literals for more information.
